Drones used for disaster relief are the applications of drone that people work hard to develop in recent years. For example, the drone could potentially assist with controlling a wildfire, assessing damages, finding access points, and suppressing the fire by raining firefighting liquids on it. Drone swarm technologies and algorithms have become more mature in recent years. Advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have improved decision-making and obstacle avoidance. Drone swarms can use various methods of command and control, including preprogrammed missions with specific predefined flight paths, centralized control by a ground station or a single control drone. High-speed and long-distance wireless communication technologies such as 4G and 5G networks have improved real-time data sharing among devices. Using drone swarm technology for disaster relief can be more efficient and robust than single drone because swarms can complete a variety of tasks in parallel without human supervision. Responders could use drone swarms to find missing persons and deliver emergency care and supplies during natural disasters.

Dr. LIN received a Ph.D. degree from National Chiao Tung University (NCTU). Since 2005, he has served in the Mechanical and Mechatronics Systems Research Labs. (MMSL) of ITRI, engaged in technology research and development. The three stages of his research topics include (1). Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), micro-actuators, and precision mold manufacturing technology, (2). The motor and controller, (3). The drone. In recent years, he has focused on developing UAS, including but not limited to motor, electronic speed controller, and AI-embedded technology. This drone team has developed multi-rotor aircraft with an MTOW between 25 and 300 kg, in some cases for the certifications at Taiwan (CAA) and Japan (JCAB), respectively. They are also linking Taiwan and Japanese companies and promoting more than five cooperation cases simultaneously.
